Sedation Dentistry

Smiling girl sitting in dental chair holding thumbs upSedation dentistry is most helpful for:
•  Children with extensive treatment needs
•  A very anxious child
•  History of a traumatic dental experience
•  Strong gag reflex
•  Children who are medically compromised or have special needs

Types of sedation

Nitrous Oxide ("Laughing Gas")

Laughing gas can be utilized to help with mild anxiety. This highly effective method of sedation helps keep a nervous patient calm and is attained by inhalation of nitrous oxide (N20).

Most children become quite giggly during the process, hence the nickname. Afterwards, your child will breathe 100% oxygen to reduce the risk of adverse effects.

Oral Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is sometimes necessary for children that are unable, by either age or maturity level, to cooperate during dental treatment. Sedation is also very helpful for special needs children. There are many safe and effective sedation medications available that can help relax the child and promote a good environment for optimal and safe dental treatment.

Hospital/IV Sedation

If your child has severe dental anxiety, extensive treatment needs, and/or special needs, general anesthesia/deep sedation, is necessary for comprehensive dental care.

In this case, your child will have two teams of doctors:
1.  The anesthesia team will insure your child is comfortable and free from pain
2.  The dental team can complete the treatment in a safe and atraumatic fashion
